I'm so embarrassed. Mortified. How is it -- after having been a truly prodigious reader for more years than I'll admit to in polite public -- that I'd never read anything by Mr. Coben until now??? And a book in my #1 favorite genre, no less. As a truly picky reader from a "must-have-intelligent-and-realistic-plot / dialogue" perspective (I've even been part of a proofreading team for another well-published author, though he's nowhere near Coben's caliber), I was exceedingly impressed. I'm going to say something I've always hated reading from other reviewers because it's so cliched: I literally could not put this book down, and read VERY late into the night. Tight, unpredictable plot with characters who were, essentially, chameleons. Talk about empathy. Add tension that leaves you mentally and emotionally hanging by a thread, and you get a highly recommended read. This will definitely not be the last Harlan Coben book I read; I've already ordered 4 more!

It turns out that Olivia, who Matt met one weekend in Las Vegas while in college, also has a past that she would like to forget, but this time there are some serious, dangerous implications.The story quickly gets rather involved, extending back to Las Vegas and even reaching into a Catholic school in New Jersey. With several people turning up dead, Matt and Olivia have to go into full-on scramble mode to keep their pasts from burying them, while trying to come out the other end alive. The story threatens to derail at a few convoluted points, but actually is fairly interesting and manages to hang on by a slender plausible thread. Matt, being a sympathetic character keeps the reader's interest to the end, but most interesting is the stunning, Amazonian investigator Cingle. The author is known for creating transfixing secondary characters.
I'm not sure if I missed this the first time around or if I just have a really bad memory, but when I saw a Harlan Coben book on kindle I bought it and read it immediately. It kept my interest from page one until the very end. I loved Matt right away. I was less certain about his wife, Olivia, and couldn't guess what the complex back story would turn out to be or who was involved. There was never a dull moment as the story unfolded and reached a very satisfying ending. Great Book!
It was hard for me to make sense of all the story's and the connection to the characters..He is usually one of my favorite authors. There were two investigators. The mob. The FBI. Ladies of the night. Grieving parents. Widowed parents. Sorry, it was not my favorite book.
Harlan Coben hooks the reader from the get go. Do you ever think about what might have been in your own life if you turned away from going out with friends or if you never met somebody? How your life might have played out differently? Matt Hunter the protaganist in "The Innocent" certainly does. His life is forever changed when he makes the decision, at his best friend's urging, to stop at a party on the way back to their college. That fateful decision will color the rest of his life.Loren Muse is an investigator in the Essex County, NJ, prosecutor's office. She and Matt will cross paths when events careen into both of their lives and send each of them in search of answers.As usual with Harlan Coben's books, I did not want to put this one down to do much of anything but read. All the character's have great development and the story of how Matt and Loren's lives intersect is absolutely fantastic. You will read late into the night!
Matt Hunter is an intriguing character. He was convicted for killing a man he didn't know in a fraternity brawl. As a result he spent several years in jail. This conviction hangs over Matt for the rest of his life. He constantly fears that he will somehow be returned to jail. So, he makes inappropriate but consistent decisions throughout the book, such as not cooperating with the police. After he served his time, Matt meets the perfect woman. He tells her the truth about his conviction and jail sentence, but Olivia lies about her background. Matt and Olivia get married. And Olivia becomes pregnant. Unfortunately, however, Matt also becomes the primary suspect in a murder case. He runs. How can he get out of this? The police and FBI are closing in on him. In keeping with most Coben novels, at the last moment, the truth comes out and Matt is saved! You will love reading about Matt and Olivia and all their unsavory friends. Which cops are good guys and which are not? Should Matt confide in any of them? You will enjoy this book.
